David was caught stealing food one day from the cafeteria. When he got home his mother dragged him into the bathroom and ordered him to shove his fingers down his throat in order to vomit the stolen food. After this in another one of his mothers sick “games”, she forced him to eat his regurgitated bowl of hot dogs. David was subjected to this treatment for 8 years of his young life.


5. “If you don’t finish on time, I’m going to kill you”


After being deprived of food for three days, his mother gives him a plate of food and sets an impossible time limit for him to finish in. In her drunken rage she grabs a kitchen knife and loses her balance, and stabs her son in the chest. Initially, she took care of him herself, denying him medical care despite his significant blood loss and the severity of the stab wound, but after a few days David was left to take care of himself again, even when his stab wound became severely infected.


6.“Don’t worry he’d say. “Some day you and I will both get out of this madhouse.”


David’s father promised him that one day they would both leave that house, his father although seen by David as his hero, was not much of a father. He himself was too afraid to confront his wife about what she would do to David. Instead he would stay out of her way to keep him out of trouble.


7. “You are all mine now. Too bad your fathers not here to protect you.” “ I knew all my defenses were useless. I wasn’t going to survive. I knew she was going to kill me, if not today, tomorrow. The day I wished mother would have the mercy and kill me quickly. …I clasped my hands together, bent my head down, closed my eyes and prayed with all my heart. When the station wagon turned onto the driveway, I felt that my time had come. Before I opened the car door, I bowed my head and with peace in my heart, I whispered, “… and deliver me from evil.” “Amen”


When David’s father would leave home conditions would worsen, even though his father didn’t stop his mothers abuse his presence made her less violent. David feels that his mother is truly going to kill him with her abuse. He wishes that she would go ahead and kill him and not make him suffer. David went through so much pain, and suffering that all his defenses were now useless. David prays on the way home because his father has just left the house for good, and he is now subjected to living alone with his mother. No one can protect him now.





8. “The secretary leads me into the teachers’ lounge. After she opens the door, it takes a moment for my eyes to adjust. In front of me sitting around a table, are my homeroom teacher Mr. Zieler, my math teacher, Miss Moss, the school nurse, Mr. Hansen, and a police officer. My feet become frozen. I don’t know whether to run away or wait for the roof to cave in… I take a seat at the head of the table explaining I didn’t steal anything… today…”


David is used to getting in trouble with his teachers, so when he is faced with all of them at once he gets nervous because he assumes he is in trouble again. In reality they are there to help him. David always got in trouble for stealing other children’s lunches. He was even forced to steal food from the grocery store. His mother wouldn’t feed him for days at a time.


. “ The police officer explains why Mr. Hansen called him. I can feel myself shrink into the chair. The officer asks that I tell him about mother. I shake my head no. Too many people already know the secret, and I know shell find out… Then the nurse made me stand up and show the police man the scar on my chest. Without hesitation, I tell him it was an accident; which it was- mother never meant to stab me. I cry as I spill my guts, telling them mother punishes me because I am bad. I wish they would leave me alone. I feel so slimy inside. Now after all these years there is nothing anyone can do.” (Pg -10)


When the police officer asks David about his mother all he can think about is how much trouble he will get into for telling them. He has been under his mothers influence for so long that he doesn’t realize that the “accident” wasn’t his fault. He even thinks that the reason for him being ”punished” or abused is because he is a “bad boy”. He doesn’t realize that his mother is the bad one. He feels even more alone after this because he doesn’t know what his mother will do to him once she finds out that he told officials about her punishments.


10. “The challenges of my past have made me immensely strong inside… I have a vast appreciation for things that others may take for granted… My blessings also mean having the opportunity to meet so many people who had a positive impact on my life. The endless sea of faces, prodding me, teaching me to make the right choices, and helping me in my quest for success. They encouraged my hunger to prevail.”


This quote is at the end of the book, all along David had hope that one day he would get out of his terrible situation, and he finally did. Since he was deprived severely as a child, he has a greater appreciation for the simple things in life. His goal is to inform as many people as possible about child abuse, and put a stop to it.

I thought that this story was quite boring and very uninteresting. I couldn’t follow along with this story at all because I would fall asleep every time I tried. I finished it though after awhile, even at the end of the story I’m not sure what it was about. I know that Beowulf fought Grendel, Grendel’s mom, and a dragon.


My opinion is that I think that there was no point to this story, I’m not quite sure why it’s in an English textbook and why we were suppose to read it. I suppose that there was the point that he was a hero. I guess that was good. Every one needs a hero; I’m not quite sure who my hero is. While reading Beowulf and how he is a hero made me think of last year’s tragic day of September 11, 001 it was very sad and all I could think about was the fire fighters and the people and the pilots that risked or did take there lives. If anyone should be called real hero’s its would be them. Everyone that was around when this tragic day happened will always think of those heroes’s. Know those hero’s are the ones we should be reading and doing reports about real hero’s not boring and fairytale heroes.

Christianity vs. non-Christianity culture in Beowulf


The epic Beowulf deals with two different cultural aspects, one being a heroic warrior of a non-Christian Anglo-Saxon culture, and the other a Christian culture.


The story of Beowulf shows the effect of Christianity in the Anglo-Saxon society by instilling certain virtues. The menacing character, Grendel, is portrayed as horrible yet showing a Christian influence. Grendel first is described as grim demon haunting the marches, marauding round the heath and the desolate fen(Norton 4). The Christian influence is displayed on Grendel because he is a descendent of Cain and is rejected by God and lives in suffering due to carrying the curse of Cain. When Grendel arrives in the mead hall, he is outraged due to the bard who is singing a song about creation. This, however, is completely different than the thanes who are celebrating God’s grace by the singing of songs. Gredels disregard for God is revealed here since he goes to the mead hall and kills all the men.


Beowulfs Christian virtue is demonstrated through his self sacrifice for the good of others. Beowulf risks his own life when he fights Grendel and dives in to the mere alone. Beowulf swimming to the bottom of the mere can be symbolized as swimming into hell. Since on his journey a bewildering horde came at him from the depth, droves of sea-beasts who attacked with tusks and tore at his chain-mail in a ghastly onslaught (Norton 65). All of the creatures can be shown as the entry into hell. Another Christian value Beowulf characterizes is not having greediness when he decides to bring back Grendels head back instead of the treasure he found.

Another heroic trait of Beowulf is his lack of fear of dying. He always expresses his death wishes before going into battle and requests to have any possessions delivered to his people. He states if this combat kills me, take care of my company and my beloved Hrothgar, to send Hygelac the treasures I receive (Norton 65). Beowulf realizes that when he fights the evil monsters, Grendel and Grendels mother, that he will achieve immortality as the defeater or loser. The non-Christian value is displayed when he understands that fate will work its magic no matter what and death can approach him any time in his life. Beowulf declares, Fate goes ever as fate must” (Norton 4). Beowulf believing in fate shows that he thinks a certain power controls what happens in one’s life. However, the Anglo-Saxons in this society also believed God as being the resolute supremacy.


The Anglo-Saxon non-Christian value is later expressed in the end of the epic when Beowulf, is dying decides to have a burial on a funeral pyre, instead of a Christian type of service. And instead of having a Christian value of understanding that there is no need for treasure after leaving earth but that it should be left for the benefit others, he insisted that it be buried with him. This displays a more non-Christian value than a Christian value in the end.


Beowulf is a prime example of a hero. This is shown with his bravery and supernatural strength. He came to the Danes wanting to help them and ended up helping them in the end. The epic shows the culture of the Anglo-Saxons while incorporating both Christian and non-Christian values.

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, numerous references are made to different conditions of weather. Even the title of the novel suggests the storminess present in nearly the entire book. The often-changing weather serves to signify the characters’ personalities, as well as the changes that they go through during the course of their lives. In fact, the first incidence of a reference being made to the weather occurs with a thought of Mr. Lockwood. “Wuthering being a significant provincial adjective,” he says, “descriptive of the atmospheric tumult to which its station is exposed in stormy weather” (46). Because Wuthering Heights has been built on the moors, wind blows fiercely during storms. At this point, Lockwood knows little about Heathcliff, but the significance of the house’s name will become more apparent to him later in the novel. After getting settled into his new house at Thrushcross Grange, Lockwood decides to pay a visit to Heathcliff. He arrives at the house just as snow is starting to fall and observes the yard. “On that bleak hilltop,” he notes, “the earth was hard with a black frost, and the air made me shiver through every limb” (51). While it was cold at his own house, it seems even colder here, and the weather is beginning to get worse. It isn’t even until he is at the gate of Wuthering Heights that the snow starts to fall. As will later be shown, the earth at Wuthering Heights is as cold and hard as Heathcliff’s heart. He provides Lockwood with little food or comforts at his arrival and does not attempt to be a gracious host. It is only with a great deal of gruffness that he decides to allow Lockwood to spend the night at his house until he can go home the next morning. This is one of the first indications of Heathcliff’s lack of compassion for the rest of humanity. The next day, Heathcliff offers to accompany Lockwood on his way back home, explaining that he will not be able to find the way on his own. While Lockwood thought he would be able to find his way home based on rocks sticking up along the path, he finds the hills to be “one billowy, white ocean; the swells and falls...blotted out from the chart which my yesterday’s walk left pictured in my mind” (7-). The long, winding path nearest to Wuthering Heights is much harder to travel than the one that leads to Thrushcross Grange, and it is easy to get lost. The first path resembles Heathcliff’s own path to the wild and contemptuous man he has become. If Wuthering Heights is hopelessness and desolation, Thrushcross Grange is peace and salvation. Heathcliff leaves Lockwood at this point, telling his tenant that he will be able to make it the rest of the way on his own. Heathcliff lives at Wuthering Heights because a desolate place is where he belongs, and his not walking the rest of the way to Thrushcross Grange is symbolic of his not being able, or even wanting, to travel toward happiness. Any happiness he had ended when Catherine died. One big turning point marked by stormy weather in the book is the day Heathcliff leaves Wuthering Heights for the first time. After hearing Catherine say that she could never marry him, Heathcliff’s heart is broken and he creeps out of the house. When Catherine realizes his absence, she gets extremely agitated, pacing from the gate to the door of the house and wondering where he could be. The weather in this scene is very ominous. “It was a very dark evening for summer the clouds appeared inclined to thunder,” Nelly tells Lockwood (14). Not much later, a horrible storm begins. “There was a violent wind,” Nelly says, “and either one or the other split a tree off at the corner of the building...but the uproar passed away in twenty minutes, leaving us all unharmed, excepting Cathy, who got thoroughly drenched” (15). Although it is the middle of summer, one of the times a storm like this one is unlikely occur, Heathcliff’s disappearance seems to bring it about. Catherine’s relationship with Heathcliff is as mysterious and powerful as the storm, which is why she stands out in the downpour without giving a second thought to her wellbeing. Their relationship has always been wild; they spent much of their childhood running among the moors, where they were unrestricted and free to be themselves. Heathcliff has run off into these moors again, in the midst of the storm. The violent storm, complete with lightning fierce enough to split a tree, symbolizes the wrenching split of their intense bond. The day preceding and morning after Catherine’s death are surprisingly beautiful. On the day before she dies, the sun is shining and the sound of a flowing brook can be heard through her window. Though Catherine is near death, one good thing happens to her on that day � Heathcliff comes to see her. Their reunion is bittersweet. He is anguished by her sickly appearance and riddled with guilt and despair, and she expresses fury at him that he abandoned her and that she is now dying because of it. But then they embrace, and nothing could possibly tear them apart. The two who were always in love and meant to be together finally are, unfortunately right before they will have to be torn apart for the final time. Very early the next morning, Catherine gives birth to Cathy and passes away two hours later. She dies appropriately in darkness, but the next morning’s sunshine fills the house with a soft glow. Edgar and Heathcliff are distraught and quiet, but the reason for the sunshine is that Cathy has found peace at last. “Her brow smooth, her lids closed, her lips wearing the expression of a smile,” Nelly says. “No angel in heaven could be more beautiful than she appeared; and I partook of the infinite calm in which she lay” (01). Catherine’s life had been filled with turmoil the death of her father, Heathcliff’s departure, marriage to someone she did not love, and long periods of illness. Death was the only thing that brought her any relief from her suffering, and the sun shining from the heavens expressed the way she was finally free from pain. Years later, the young Cathy is grown and marries Heathcliff’s son, Linton, who soon dies. She later falls in love with Hareton Earnshaw, who returns her love, and in this she finds happiness that her mother was never able to know. Heathcliff is angered, but one night he walks out of the house, and when he returns, his normally bitter countenance has changed to one of a strange happiness. Warm, sunny spring days with bright blue skies follow his return for four days in which he refuses to eat anything and locks himself in his room. Then the weather changed. The next evening, it rained all night and into the morning. Nelly, taking a walk around the yard, noticed that Heathcliff’s window was open and the rain was pouring in. The days leading to Heathcliff’s death, he finally managed to make some peace with himself and the world, as Cathy had in her death. But his changing mood and changed behavior could not make him a better person than he always had been. He died that night with a “frightful, life-like gaze of exultation...and his parted lips, and sharp white teeth sneered too” (65). It is difficult to know what Heathcliff was thinking in his final moments. While her death was surrounded by sunshine, he died during a night of merciless rain. Despite her fits of temper and selfishness, Catherine was always a warm-hearted person deep down, as shown by the way she would stay to console people after hurting their feelings when she was a child. But Heathcliff’s only expression of any compassion was toward Catherine; otherwise, he was as cold as the rain that soaked his lifeless corpse. The weather present at his death served as a fitting end to his tortured life. Emily Bronte makes good use of the weather in important parts of Wuthering Heights. The climates allow the reader insight into the minds, personalities, and situations of the characters, who are as complex as the settings in which they find themselves. Snow in the beginning of autumn is not surprising in a book where love is found, lost, and found again, sometimes in another person and sometimes in death.

In the cities, entertainment was very important. People wanted to have fun. They wanted to clear their minds after days of non-stop working. Without entertainment, the workers would have been angry every day and would not have gotten enough work done. When the workers went to work in a good mood, they got their jobs done very fast, because their minds were clear of any problem that was troubling them.


Taverns were very popular. They were like today’s bars. Men liked to go to taverns to drink and have a good time. They also met their friends and talked to them about the day’s news. Women served as barmaids. They took people’s orders and served them their food and drinks. A popular drink at the time was called mead. It was made of fermented honey. It was very sweet, yet intoxicating. It was kept in barrels outside of the tavern. Sometimes, when the temperature changed, the barrels would burst open. Men from all around the city would come with their mugs to get free drinks.

In this essay, I will talk about this particular woman’s character, personality, family background, marriage, how she shaped English history, and what influence she had on England and its people.


Catherine’s birth took place on December 16, 1485, at Alcala de Henares, in the archbishop of Toledo’s palace. Catherine was born to parents, Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile. Her mother and father’s marriage had a very powerful effect on Europe. Their marriage changed Spanish history because it united the Kingdom of Spain and this resulted in successfully getting rid of the Moors from Granada. Catherine was only years old when her parents decided she would marry Arthur Prince of Wales. The contract was signed and Catherine was being prepared for her new husband. This marriage was essential for the Tudor family because the Plantagenet family wanted the throne Henry (Tudor) was now sitting on. Henry VII married Edward IV’s daughter who gave him a male child in 1486. Henry VII wanted to strengthen, secure, and validate his position of a King. Catherine might not have been quick but she was wise because she succeeded in almost everything she tried. But there was an important mission she was not able to accomplish. Catherine could not give England a son it so badly needed.

The change came 7 years later in 1510 when Henry VII passed away. His death allowed Henry to wed Catherine without having to pay the dowry first. Shortly after Henry VIIs coronation, Henry and Catherine got married. Henry VIII took the throne at the age of 18, married to year old Catherine.


Catherine and Henry had opposite personalities and interests. Catherine was very intelligent, diplomatic, patient and disciplined. Henry was careless, disorganized and a big spender. Yet, there was affection and love present. Catherine, however still had trouble with English, and Latin was different, which caused her and Henry not to communicate as much. Despite these differences, their marriage worked. Henry always turned to Catherine for advice. She helped him make crucial decisions and pushed for English Foreign Policy.


The same year the couple got married, Catherine got pregnant but their son died at birth. But Catherine did not give up. In 1511, she was pregnant again but her child died 5 days after birth. Then two years later, Catherine got pregnant again but had a miscarriage. Three years later in 1515, they had a boy but he died several days after birth. Finally, in 1516 the Queen of England gave birth to a child that survived. But the child was a girl and a girl was not what Henry wanted. So Henry and Catherine kept trying. Catherine was pregnant twice more but neither baby survived.


Catherine devoted her love and care to her only child, Mary. She withdrew from society and was very concentrated on giving Mary everything she could give. Mary was educated in a Catholic manner. Even though Henry wanted a son, he was not disappointed with the daughter. He still had hopes a son would come along one day. But Henrys patience wore thin. He began having extramarital affairs on the side and impregnated one of his mistresses, Elizabeth Blount. She gave Henry the son he always wanted. His illegitimate son was proof Catherine was responsible for not being able to have a son, not him.


Catherine had become very withdrawn. However, people loved her very much. They were fond of her because she had done a lot of charity business, and pushed for education quite persistent. By mid 150’s, Catherine was completely withdrawn from the society.


Henry now had a few mistresses. It was when he met a woman named Anne Boleyn that his and Catherine’s lives would change forever. The King had the tendency to fall in and out of love rather quickly. Anne Boleyn was able to keep Henry out of her bedroom unlike other mistresses. But that intrigued Henry even more because he took that as a challenge. His desires were not satisfied which created lots of tension and now Henry was determined to marry this woman. But that meant he first had to get a divorce because he was still married to Catherine.


Henry was trying to think of the best ways to get a divorce. But then, he thought of a good “excuse”. Hi marriage with Catherine was an incestuous one because she was his sister-in-law. She was married to his older brother Arthur Prince of Wales, and therefore she was like his sister. Incestuous marriages were not allowed by the Church. Now Henry was asking for an annulment, not a divorce, for his marriage to Catherine was not really a marriage at all. The Pope was to grant the annulment, but at that time it was a rather nerve racking time, because Charles V, who was Catherine’s cousin, was in Italy. The Church was afraid of what he might do. This caused the Pope to delay his decisions due to his fears. Henry and Wolsey, Henry’s great advisor, pushed for the annulment as hard as they could. Wolsey was not liked by anyone except the King, because he was for annulment. People loved Catherine and evidently did not want her marriage to be annulled. By the end of 150s, Henry had become very impatient and furious with the Church. To make matters worse, Wolsey died in 150.


In the summer of 15, the Pope appointed the court to gather and make a decision about Henry VIIIs marriage to Catherine. Wolsey and Catherine were both present. Wolsey was not allowed to participate, he played a role of a bystander. Catherine was there to defend her right as a wife. She declared that her first marriage was not consummated and therefore her marriage to Henry was not an incestuous one. Catherine fought vigorously for her husband, but all her attempts to save their marriage were unsuccessful. Finally in 15, the marriage was annulled.


Henry wasn’t a “kingly” King. He had put England in debt only for his advisors to pull it back out of debt. He didn’t care much about England and its people. Yet, he loved himself very much. He thought he was next door to God. Henry took all the credit for all the positive changes in England. He did not deserve the throne. If anyone should have been King, it is Catherine of Aragon.


Catherine’s last years were spent in sadness and suffering. She was often ill. Her title, The Queen of England was taken away, and she was now referred to as Princess dowager of Wales. She remained a true Catholic till the last day of her life. She died on January 7,156 in Kimbolton Castle. Catherine was buried with a ceremony according to her new title, not as The Queen of England.. In her last letter to Henry, she stated that she had loved him deeply and forgiven him his mistakes, and signed it Katharine the Queen. She was said to have “a quality of mind…” (pg1). Catherine remained the loyal wife and Queen of England till the day she died.

A Pioneers Life


Life on the frontier was dangerous for everyone who lived there. Whether you were from there or an immigrant just moving to the plain it was difficult. There homes were rugged, there was fighting over tools and animals, feuding between families, men and women committed suicide, the language barrier for immigrants and the weather were hard on everyone and everything. Frontier life in general was hard.


In modern America, the land is overpopulated, over cultivated, and buildings as far as the eyes can see. When one thinks of frontier life one thinks of rough looking men and women struggling to survive. Our viewpoint is not far from the truth of the lives that many men and women spent under the starts giving us the land that we now have. The frontier in that day was barren of houses, fields and people. “The little town of Hanover, anchored on a windy Nebraska tableland, was trying not to be blown away…low drab buildings huddled on the gray prairie, under a gray sky” (Cather, Pioneers 1). In different literature written about and during the time of the frontier are all about the same when it comes to the setting of the story itself.


A typical pioneer’s home was composed of rough wood, sod and anything else that deemed useful. Some of the pioneers that had lived on the prairie long enough to make a profit built sturdier and nicer looking homes. “The dwelling-houses were set about haphazard on the tough prairie sod…None of them had any appearance of permanence, and the howling wind blew under them as well as over them” (Cather, Pioneers 1). During the winter months, when the weather was cold and desolate, the cold air would seep through the cracks and chill the home. There was usually a wood stove in the middle or the corner of the kitchen to cook the food and also to warm the house. The washtub was usually located behind or near the stove. “The stove was very large, with bright nickel trimmings, and behind it there was a long wooden bench against the wall, and a tin washtub, into which grandmother poured hot and cold water” (Cather, Antonia ). Another hardship the immigrants faced was when they lived in their homeland they were either rich or well off. When they came to America they were poor and living in poverty. “Cather portrays the immense hardships faced by figures like Antonia Shimerda and her family, not only the hardships of poverty, landscape and climate, but also the social barriers erected against immigrants of particular and ethnic and religious backgrounds” (Dykema-VanderArk 1). That was shock enough for many that journeyed to America. They had to rely on neighbors, who sometimes lived far off, to supply food and clothing in the hard times. The dwellings that the immigrants called “home” were usually nothing more than a hole dug in a hill or a cave. “the unprepared, impoverished Shimerdas live in a sod dugout-a cramped dwelling “dug out” from the soil that is plastered over with sod…The interior of this “badger hole” is even worse, as Jim discovers on a later visit” (Millspaugh ). Their homes were damp in the rain season and cold in the winter. In the case of the Shimerda family, they lived in a cave and were close to starving the first year of their stay in America. “The animalistic groveling struggle for survival of the penniless Shimerdas during their first winter in a sod hut. Cather depicts the hardships of the struggle to endure the weather and to master the land” (Blackall 1). The Shimerda’s home wasn’t one of extravagance and riches but it was a home of poverty.


When immigrants moved to American in search of a better life, they were not prepared for the language barrier many received. Many of the immigrants didn’t think the language gap would be that great when they came. “His mother scowled and said sternly, ‘Marek’ then spoke rapidly to Krajiek in Bohemian. ‘She wants me to tell you he wont hurt nobody…’” (Cather, Antonia 18). When they noticed they couldn’t teach themselves they often hired people to teach them. Mr. Shimerda wanted the best for his family, knowing Antonia had the passion to learn the language, “’Name? What Name?’ she asked, touching me (Jim) on the shoulder. I told her my name, and she repeated it after me and made Yulka say it. She pointed to the cottonwood tree…’What Name?’” (Cather, Antonia 0), he wanted her to study the language and he wanted Mrs. Burden and Jim to teach her. “We went with Mr. Shimerda…He placed this book in my grandmother’s hands…and said…’Te-e-ach, te-e-ach my An-tonia!’” (Cather, Antonia 0). Jim and Antonia would study pretty much everyday. Antonia loved to learn. It didn’t take long for her to speak the language fluently.


The original farmers, the pioneers, were very hard workers. Being hard workers fit right into their hard lifestyle. When they plowed their fields they had to do it in time with the season. Plowing was one of the hardest, most time-consuming tasks of farming. They had to hitch the horse or cow to the plow and then steer from behind while all the time keeping the plow well into the ground. They couldn’t plow just anytime they had to do it when they time was right or the crop wouldn’t be good. They couldn’t plow to soon or the ground would harden again and the crop wouldn’t grow properly. They couldn’t do it to late either or the crop wouldn’t be ripe in time for the harvest.


The immigrants were too poor to hire people to help them with the chores of farming so they had to have the women come out from the house to help. The immigrant women were usually hard and coldhearted when it came to a social mentality. They were to work as the men would; doing everything that is expected of a man to perform. In the case of Antonia she became hardhearted and strong. She didn’t want to study they language any longer. “’I ain’t got time to learn. I can work like mans now. My mother can’t say no more how Ambrosch do all and nobody to help him. I can work as much as him. School is all right for little boys. I help make this land one good farm” (Cather, Antonia 80). Antonia began boasting about her strength, how she was as strong or stronger than the men. “Nowadays Tony could talk of nothing but the price of things, or how much she could lift and endure. She was too proud of her strength…farmhands around the country joked in a nasty way about it” (Cather, Antonia 81). The immigrant girls were viewed as either hardhearted and calloused workers or whores that should work in the hotels or saloons. “The casual reader may well be surprised at the number of female characters who turn out to be or to have been whores” (Simon & Schuster 6). Others viewed Antonia, as well as the other immigrant women as not good enough for their men or to come eat at their restaurants. There was a prejudice when it came to immigrants, Indians, blacks, or Asians. Many, if not all the towns of that day and age had a church for the whites and another church for everyone else. It was viewed as improper or just plain wrong for anyone other than a white person or family to come to a white church or establishment. There was even prejudice between nationalities of immigrants. When it came to where Mr. Shimerda was to be buried there was a controversy over a site. “The officers of the Norwegian church…had held a meeting and decided that the Norwegian graveyard could not extend its hospitality to Mr. Shimerda” (Cather, Antonia 7). Mrs. Shimerda buried Mr. Shimerda at the crossroads of their property which was the custom in their religion when someone committed suicide.


There was, at times, feuding between families over various things. Many of the feuds were over borrowed farm equipment and misunderstandings. Most times the “feuding” was just the families stopped talking to each other. There were on occasion more dangerous feuding which involved shooting, stealing and murders. In the case of My Antonia, the feuding between the Burdens and the Shimerdas was not speaking, a couple of arguments and fistfights.


“Jake asked for the collar, he grunted and scratched his head…Jake, feeling responsible for it, flared up…Ambrosch…began to climb the mill. Jake caught him by the belt…he (Ambrosch) lunged out with a vicious kick at Jake’s stomach…he (Jake) landed Ambrosch a blow on the head…Ambrosch dropped over, stunned” (Cather, Antonia 8).


Living on the prairie, this example is one of the more mild feuds. Many of the other feuds were more deadly.


The last thing that was hard about prairie life was the weather. The summers were extremely hot and in places humid. The falls were hard because that is the time of the harvest. The springs are a time of plowing and planting. The winters are bitter cold and full of snow. For the immigrants it was doubly hard because they were poor and didn’t have a lot of food in the first months. It was a fight for survival.


One my conclude that life in general on the prairie was hard. There was nothing easy about it. It was a fight to survive and live together. One would think that nothing good could have come out of the lives of the pioneers but they would be mistaken. If it wasn’t for their faith in God and hard work we as a country wouldn’t exist.

Tone is a very important key when it comes to writing short stories. Tone is identified as a manner of expression in speech or writing, and Edgar Allan Poe shows an interesting tone to his audience through his many works of literature. Tone also tells of the author feelings and expressions. In the short stories examined, I have noticed that his works consist of anger, rage, and revenge. I get the impression of a dark dreary place with no signs of life with freaky things all around. His stories are full of suspense that keeps his audience on the edge of their seats, anticipating to know what’s next. His particular style of writing may be a result of his tragic childhood and a rough life dealing with many hardships throughout.


In the three works, “The Fall of the House of Usher”, “The Cask of Amontillado”, and “The Raven”, they have all contained many examples of Poe’s tones. His stories never seem to in end in a calm peaceful manner. Instead they finish in dark, violent, shocking scenes that astound his viewers. His stories are sometimes left unanswered with no explanation for some of the actions that take place in the stories. In “The Fall of the House of Usher”, Poe uses a very creepy tone. The man that lives with his sister in the old mansion has gone insane and his sister has an incurable disease. The man named Roderick buried his twin sister Madeline thinking that she was dead. Then, at the end, Madeline arises form her coffin and scares her brother to death. Then that old beat up house crumbles to the ground signifying death. In, “The House of Amontillado”, the tone is that of hate and revenge. Montressor wants to get even with Fortunato by getting him drunk downstairs and killing him. He barricades him in the wall and lets him die of starvation or fright, whichever were to come first. This action shows feelings of hate and strong dislike towards his friend. Montressor seems to takes things very personally as his family motto states, “No one can harm me unpunished”. Finally in the last story covered, “The Raven”, this story is also about revenge from the Raven that haunts the man constantly, making him go insane. He sits upon the perch staring down at the man not giving him any peace. The Raven seems to be unconquerable for the old man. Finally the man falls to the ground knowing he has failed.


In conclusion, all these stories tell me that anger can sometimes be taken too seriously with many crucial outcomes. All the characters are persistent in their intentions and follow them out precisely. And payback has never been more distinguished in my perspective. His short stories were very entertaining and fun to read. His style was different from the ordinary which made it very unique and a new experience for me as well. I liked the idea of creativity and something you would never expect to happen. The irony was very well presented and easily identified. His feelings and emotions contribute to the fact that he has been abandoned before many times by his uncle that he came to live with so he decided to incorporate that into his works. His main purpose was deliver mind chilling tales and inform at the same time. His choices of words are sometimes hard to understand when reading but quotes and phrases help to determine what exactly is going on in the story. Edgar Allan Poe is a very good writer and I’m interested in what other tales he has to tell.

Toni Morissons novel The Bluest Eye is about the life of the Breedlove family who resides in Lorain, Ohio, in the late 10s. This family consists of the mother Pauline, the father Cholly, the son Sammy, and the daughter Pecola. The novels focal point is the daughter, an eleven-year-old Black girl who is trying to conquer a bout with self-hatred. Everyday she encounters racism, not just from white people, but mostly from her own race. In their eyes she is much too dark, and the darkness of her skin somehow implies that she is inferior, and according to everyone else, her skin makes her even uglier. She feels she can overcome this battle of self-hatred by obtaining blue eyes, but not just any blue. She wants the bluest eye. Morrison is able to use her critical eye to reveal to the reader the evil that is caused by a society that is indoctrinated by the inherent goodness and beauty of whiteness and the ugliness of blackness. She uses many different writing tools to depict how white beliefs have dominated American and African American culture. The narrative structure of The Bluest Eye is important in revealing just how pervasive and destructive social racism is. Narration in novel comes from several sources. Much of the narration comes from Claudia MacTeer as a nine year old child, but Morrison also gives the reader the insight of Claudia reflecting on the story as an adult, some first person narration from Pecolas mother, and narration by Morrison herself as an omniscient narrator. Pecolas experiences would have less meaning coming from Pecola herself because a total and complete victim would be an unreliable narrator, unwilling or unable to relate the actual circumstances of that year. Claudia, from her youthful innocence, is able to see and relate how the other characters, especially Pecola, idolize the ideal of beauty presented by white, blue-eyed movie stars like little Shirley Temple. In addition to narrative structure, the structure and composition of the novel itself help to illustrate how much and for how long white ideas of family and home have been forced into black culture. Instead of conventional chapters and sections, The Bluest Eye is broken up into seasons, fall, winter, spring, and summer. This type of organization suggests that the events described in The Bluest Eye have occurred before, and will occur again. This kind of cycle suggests that there is notion that there is no escape from the cycle of life that Breedloves and MacTeer live in. Further, dividing the book are small excerpts from the Dick and Jane primer that is the archetype of the white upper-middle class lifestyle. Each excerpt has, in some way, to do with the section that follows. So the section that describes Pecolas mother is started with an excerpt describing Dick and Janes mother, and so on. The excerpts from Dick and Jane that head each chapter are typeset without any spaces or punctuation marks. The Dick and Jane snippets show just how prevalent and important the images of white perfection are in Pecolas life; Morrisons strange typography illustrates how irrelevant and inappropriate these images actually are. Names play an important part in The Bluest Eye because they are often symbolic of conditions in society or in the context of the story. The name of the novel, The Bluest Eye, is meant to get the reader thinking about how much value is placed on blue-eyed little girls. Pecola and her family are representative of the larger African-American community, and their name, Breedlove, is ironic because they live in a society that does not breed love. In fact, it breeds hate; hate of blackness, and thus hatred of oneself. The MacTeer girls are flattered when Mr. Henry said Hello there. You must be Greta Garbo, and you must be Ginger Rogers, for the names ring of beauty that the girls feel they will never reach. Soaphead Church represents, as his name suggests, the role of the church in African-American life. I, I have caused a miracle. I gave her the eyes. I gave her the blue, blue, two blue eyes, Soaphead says. The implication is that the churchs promise that if you worship God and pray to Him that everything will be alright is no better than Soapheads promise to Pecola that she will have blue eyes. Morrison reveals the significance of Pecolas name through the character of Maureen Peal. Maureen confuses Pecolas name with the name of a character in the movie Imitation of Life. By this allusion, Morrison illustrates that Pecolas life is an imitation of the real experiences of black women. Morrison also uses metaphors to describe the conditions under which African-Americans in general and Pecola in particular are forced to live. There are two major metaphors in The Bluest Eye, one of marigolds and one of dandelions. Claudia, looking back as an adult, says in the beginning of the novel, there were no marigolds in the fall of 141. She and her sister plant marigold seeds with the belief that if the marigolds would grow and survive, so would Pecolas baby. Morrison unpacks the metaphor throughout the book, and, through Claudia, finally explains it and broadens its scope to all African-Americans on the last page. I even think now that the land of the entire country was hostile to marigolds that year. Certain seeds it will not nurture, certain fruits it will not bear . . . The implication is that Pecola, like so many other African-Americans, never had a chance to grow and succeed because she lived in a society (soil) that was inherently racist, and would not nurture her. The other flower, the dandelion, is important as a metaphor because it represents Pecolas image of herself. Pecola passes some dandelions going into Mr. Yacobowskis store. Why, she wonders, do people call them weeds? She thought they were pretty. After Mr. Yacobowski humiliates her, she again passes the dandelions and thinks; They are ugly. They are weeds. She has transferred societys dislike of her to the dandelions. In The Bluest Eye, Toni Morrison tells the story of a little black girl who thinks that if she can live up to the image of the blue-eyed Shirley Temple and Dick and Jane that she will have the perfect life that they have. The importance of this book goes beyond its value as a work of literature. Morrison speaks to the masses, both white and black, showing how a racist social system wears down the minds and souls of people, how dominate images of white heroes and heroines with blue eyes and wonderful lives show young black children that to be white means to be successful and happy, and then they look around at their own lives of poverty and oppression and learn to hate their black heritage for keeping them from the Dick and Jane world. Morrison does not solve these problems, nor does she even try, but she does show a reflection of a world that cannot call itself right or moral.
